One Saturday afternoon I was at a WordPress Meetup and was listening to a conversation between two attendees. One was explaining the she created her blog using WordPress.com because she wanted to learn how it works and then move up in the World. She went on to justify her choice by saying that she did not want to deal with hosting or any of the other technical stuff.

So I am sitting there thinking to myself. She is giving up the freedom of a self hosted blog because she wants to choose a name, choose a theme, and start to blog. This can be a good way to first determine if blogging is for you. You can also build a following while you define your niche. Are you thinking about going this route or have already gone this route?

If you have, my question is, what is your EXIT PLAN? How do you transition from a free website or blog to a self hosted website? Eventually you will realize you want more or that you are ready to take your web presence to the next level.

The perfect example of not having a plan is when a user of WordPress.com realizes that she has a successful blog with a following, but she can not turn it into a business. The purpose of a business is to make money. It is against WordPress.com’s Terms of Service to place ads, affiliate links, paid posts, or participate in any another type of money making activity. WordPress.com is just for personal blogs. WordPress.com does not cost you any money, but it does not allow you to make any money either.

So if you want to make your own terms of service and make money from your website it is time to create your own website.

A self hosted WordPress website allows you to choose any free, premium or custom WordPress theme. It allows you to extend it to do what you want it to do, such as sell info products, sell ads, or start an email list . A self hosted website can grow and turn into a profitable marketing hub for your business.
