Don’t Buy Your Domain Name Until You Read This

Choosing your domain name and your domain registrar, are two steps that you cannot skip if you are going to create your own website. Your domain name is your website address which helps people find you online just like your home address helps people locate you offline. You website domain name would look something like createawebsitekit.com. That’s a domain name.

How to Choose a Domain Name?

When choosing a Domain name you have three choices – a branded domain name, a generic keyword rich domain name, or a personal domain name.

Branded Domain Name

A branded domain name is good if you are trying to build brand recognition. A branded domain name would be your company name. Whenever possible get your company name as your domain name.

Keyword Domain Name

A keyword rich domain name is great for if you are not able to get a variation of your company name or you are going to be doing affiliate marketing. A keyword rich domain name is great for search engine rankings. It also makes it easy for people to determine what your site is about and can make it easy to remember. Just don’t put a lot of key words together that don’t make since.

Personal Domain Name

A personal domain name is good for building your personal brand and showing your expertise. So I guess what I am saying is that a personal domain name should be used for a portfolio or blogging to build “BRAND YOU”.

What Suffix should you choose?

Try to get a .com domain name. Remember to have at least three possible domain name ranked from most first choice to third place. If your domain name is not available as a .com you may want to consider a different suffix such as, a .net, .co, or .biz.

I recommend that you obtain a domain name that closely resembles what you or your business is about because it will help to shape your identity and brand on the internet. A short domain name is easier to remember. Before you register your domain name write it down forwards and backwards to make sure it does not spell out anything that is negative or offensive.

How to Register a Domain Name?

There are a number of Domain Registrars to choose from. Some domain registrars only register domains while some also provide hosting. You should keep your hosting company and your domain registrar separate to give you a little freedom to move your site, without having to be concerned about losing your domain name. I recommend namecheap.com. I have about domain names registered with namecheap.com and have been completely happy with their prices and customer service.

Summary

  1. Develop a domain name that is Short & Memorable.
  2. Write a list of possible .com domain names. If you are having trouble Market Samurai can help you choose an available domain name.
  3. Remember to write each choice backwards, write it forwards, and dissect it to make sure it is not negative or offensive.
  4. Purchase your domain name from namecheap.com
  5. Remember, your domain name represents your business and your brand.

Why Use WordPress For Your Website

When I created my first website with WordPress in 2008, I created everything from scratch. I created the theme from scratch. I coded up everything. But, now I’m at the point where I’ve learned there is no need to recreate the wheel. Now when I create a WordPress website just point-and-click, copy and paste. You don’t need all the complexities of learning code, HTML and PHP, or anything like that just to get your website up. I m going to tell you why you should use WordPress for your website.

The first reason why I recommend you use WordPress to create your website is because it’s really simple to use. Let’s say, you want to add a new page to your website. All you have to do is log in to your admin area and go to ‘Add new page.’ You type in the page title. You type in your page content or copy and paste it. In the content area you have a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editor, with options like ‘B’ for bold, ‘I’ for italics. I know somebody sitting there saying, “Oh man, that’s just like creating a Word processing document.” You’re right! That’s how easy it is to add your content. When you’re finished adding your content or you’re finished making changes to your content, you’ll click the little button that says ‘Publish’ or ‘Update’ depending on what you’ve done, so far. That’s the first reason why I recommend WordPress. It’s just really simple to use.

The second reason is that you can make it look the way you want it to look because there are thousands of themes available for you to choose from. All you have to do is decide, “Okay, do I want one column, two columns, or three columns? Do I want something that already has the colors I want or do I want something that I can change however I want? Do I want to have different page layouts or is the same page layout good for me?” You just decide what you want.

The third item is that you can make it do what you want it to do. You’re like, “Huh?” Well, let me put it this way. Let’s say you want to add videos to your website. Great! There is a plug-in you can add to your website to display videos. A plug-in is a small piece of code that someone else in the WordPress community has written to add additional feature to your website. Maybe you want to collect leads, people’s names and email addresses so, you can send them messages. Hey, great! There’s a plug-in that will do that. Anything that you want your website to be able to do, you can make it do just by simply adding a plug-in. WordPress can already do a lot but, for some things you’re going to want to add a plug-in.

If you notice, I have not told you that you have to learn HTML or PHP because, you don’t! That’s not required for you to create your own website. You can create a website without learning HTML or PHP. Take action now and create your website using WordPress. Why? It’s simple to use. You can make it look the way you want to. You can make it do what you want it to do. Lastly, no HTML or PHP to learn.

Planning A Website

For anything to work well, care must be taken to make firm, workable plans to execute it and the same goes for your website. With a well thought out website, you will be able to create a site that generates multiple streams of income for you. In fact, many websites are abandoned because they were not well planned and did not get a single visitor. Eventually the website owner that once had high hopes of making money online lost that initial motivation to update it anymore and it is now wasted cyberspace.

Don’t let that be you. Before you start to build a website take the time to plan your website. When planning a website there are initial questions you need to answer. Once you can answer the question of who will visit your website you can understand why you’d actually need a website for your business. Plan your website with your visitors in mind.

Once you have identified who your visitors are, why they will come to your site, and how they will get there you can set your initial goals for your website. What action do you want users to take once they reach your website? What path will get users to the desired action? Consider what purpose your website will serve and have a good idea of who will visit your website when you are in the planning stages of your website. Keep your perfect visitor in mind and design your site to meet their needs.
